Books about Chinese Healing Foods
It is important to understand that there is a difference between Chinese Food Therapy and Chinese Medical Diet. Chinese Food Therapy is an approach to regular daily cooking to enhance and promote good health. The Chinese Medical Diet is geared to solve specific health issues. It is important to understand that these approaches do not replace sound advice from one's own primary care practitioner, especially if there are ongoing or chronic health issues.
In my mind, two books are particularly useful to start with. Between Heaven and Earth and Healing with Whole Foods (see below). The information in these books cover the theory of Chinese Medicine and the theory behind healing foods and give practical information on food choices and preparation.
The three books that follow are considered very important. They deal with what is called the Chinese Medical Diet which is a little different from what we know as Chinese cooking, because herbs are included in many of the recipe according to which health issues are to be solved. To get the most out of this approach and because the herbs contain medicinal properties, it is best to seek advice from a TCM practitioner or nutritionist beforehand.
Penelopy Ody's book includes Western and Eastern recipes. The remaining books presents Chinese cooking as we know but are geared towards recipes and ingredient that maintains and improves health and some and a few recipes also directed to addressing specific health issues. Some of the recipes are similar or the same as what is known as the Chinese Medical Diet.
In all of these books it is important to read the introduction and foreword in order to understand how the recipes are geared. Learning to understand the rationale and aim of the Chinese view of what is considered healthy for various constitutions, seasons and health situation can give one an understanding of the selection of the individual foods in the recipes. It can also be helpful in selecting foods to cook when choosing recipes from other ethnic cooking.
